Maintaining a cool-season lawn means care all year. A healthy lawn needs attention in each season. Cool-season grass lives best in the north. It grows well in states like Connecticut, Michigan, New York, Oregon, and Utah. Your lawn may be Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass, Bentgrass, or Ryegrass. With care each season, your lawn stays bright.
Spring: Renewal and Preparation
Spring lets your lawn wake up. In the south, use pre-emergent herbicide from February to April. In the north, use it from March to May. Keep the soil below 55°F while you treat weeds.
You may use post-emergent herbicide for weeds. Wait until your grass grows well, and mow at least twice first. As spring moves on, add synthetic fertilizer once cold days pass.
Early spring is a good time for insect sprays and grub guards. Treat pests before the beetles come in June and July.
Summer: Sustaining Health
Summer brings heat. Your grass feels strain from warm days. Use care with products to keep your grass calm. Fungi can form brown spots. Use a fungicide spread through late spring and summer. Swap fungicides from time to time to keep them working.
In June, July, and August, try organic fertilizer. These carry less nitrogen so they feed your lawn without stressing it.
Mow your grass each week. Cut only one-third of its height to keep it happy.
Fall: Recovery and Growth
Fall is time for a fresh start. Cooler air helps seeds grow and makes lawn care work well. Spread air in the soil to ease seed growth. This helps fill bare spots.
In both north and south, use a fall weed blocker when the soil nears 70°F. Feed your lawn with synthetic fertilizer as it grows fast.
Winter: Rest and Preparation
Winter, from December to February, is time for rest. In the north, snow covers the lawn and keeps it safe. Now is a time for thought and plan for next year.
Extra Lawn Tips
Keep your grass mowed and water it well. Water deep yet not too often: one to three times each week. Water in the early morning so grass dries by night.
Once a year, test your soil in spring or late summer to check pH and nutrients. If there is a thick layer of thatch, remove it from March to May so water and air reach the soil.
By following simple steps each season, your cool-season lawn will be full and healthy.
