We enter another season of lawn care. I feel the joy of seeing the grass wake from its winter sleep. This year I plan a big change for my lawn. I share some early steps and thoughts as we start 2024. ## Understanding Soil Temperature

Soil temperature helps guide my work. I check the soil as a sign for pre-emergent treatments. Recently, I saw about 50.9°F on the surface and near 46°F deeper down. I watch for the temperature to stay above 50°F. Forecasts show a short cool spell this weekend. A dip into the lower 20s means I must wait. If the warmth rises, I aim for late March to treat the soil.

Assessing Lawn Progress

I look at each grass patch on my property. Some areas, like the ryegrass, show signs of green. Under the brown top layer, small green shoots now stand out. I wait to mow until the frost risk is past; frost can leave brown patches. The lawn edges seem to grow faster. Warm mulch and weed fabric raise the temperature by about 3°F. The heat helps the grass start to grow sooner.

Tackling Weeds and Other Challenges

Every lawn has its trials. I now see some weeds, especially in the new buffalo grass area. I also mark spots hurt by last year’s fungus and plan to add more seeds there. This season follows a mild winter with a brief drought. I hope for more rain soon, but I know the grass may need extra care in the dry air.

Planning Expansions and Experimentation

I look forward to trying new things. I plan two more ryegrass plots where I will test new methods. I will share results as they come. In my front yard, I work on a small golf field area of about 2,500 square feet. I design a space with nine tee boxes and one fairway. I plan the layout and water system as best I can. Even if delays happen, the progress makes me happy.

Conclusion: A Journey Begun

We welcome the growing season with hope. I track the soil temperature and plan each step with care. I learn from each setback and move forward one step at a time. I invite you to follow my progress as spring unfolds and our green spaces thrive. Cheers to a fruitful lawn year in 2024!
