As winter slips away, March gives lawn care fans a fresh chance to work on their yards. With spring near, gardeners see small hints of life. I chose to record my first mow and check my grass after the long cold season.
Finding the Right Day
March can shift in an instant. One moment, cold skies hide the sun; the next, warm rays appear. A bright day in early March made me step outside. I took in the crisp air and looked over my golf green.
Assessing the Lawn Condition
Winter tested the lawn with very low temperatures of -14 degrees. I worried for my bent grass but saw small green tips emerge. A dry week in February meant little snow cover. I cleared away fallen sticks and bits from autumn to keep the mower safe from hidden rocks or branches.
Mowing Preparations
I readied my old mower and found it tired from the off-season. Dust had gathered inside, and its parts showed wear. I checked the reel and set the height to trim just the top layer of grass. I aimed to keep the grass strong while removing excess growth. Soon, I started my first mow of 2025. ### Observations During the First Cut
The mower made smooth cuts as it moved along the lawn. I saw a good amount of green clippings, which showed a strong stand of grass after winter. Some rocks came through, likely left behind by winter sand and settling soil. A few uneven patches from last year also appeared. I will keep an eye on these spots as the grass grows thicker.
Beyond the Green
Today was mainly about the golf green. I also checked a bent grass test plot that has a role in other parts of my yard. Deer had stepped on this area in winter. When I found the ground just firm enough, I rolled the soft patches with care. I worked when the soil was neither too wet nor too dry.
What Comes Next?
I must be patient as the lawn wakes from winter sleep. The grass moves slowly toward its spring growth. I will keep the yard clear of debris and wait for the next tasks. In many northern areas, the main work starts in April.
Conclusion
The first mow is more than a simple task. It marks the return of green life above the cold ground. Today’s work reminds me that care and focus bring real rewards. With small fixes and a steady routine, my lawn is set to thrive by summer. I look forward to watching my green space wake up in the coming months.
